Koekkoek - Barrie would probably be a better pairing

Barrie is a very good offensive defenseman. He can quarterback a power play.
I can tell you without any doubt he is well below average stopping the cycle, boxing out and blocking shots.
He can be effective if used properly but trust me you don’t want him on the ice protecting a lead.

I think with all the injuries this year coaches should try and get their D core somewhat used to playing with different partners, or at least know which ones are a tire fire.

I appreciate the time and info in this post. I also appreciate the usage of the term "puck transporters". Never seen that before.

Hey, I’m no fan of Russell (and cautiously optimistic about Barrie). Yet I’d still much rather ice that duo than the aforementioned Hawks duo, especially with the Oilers forward core.

Russell/Barrie in an even strength shift would be awful. But there are worse nhl pairings. I mean some teams have pairings of guys that shouldn’t even be in the nhl.

This is aged and not entirely accurate but gives some idea.

It is not ideal, no. Ideally (in my mind anyway), Barrie would be paired with Koekkoek.

Nurse-Bear
Koekkoek-Barrie
Russell-Jones/Larsson

Not a strong D core by any stretch, but perhaps the best that the Oil can expect this season. And certainly not the league’s worst.

Sounds like Bouchard is making a strong push in camp.
